A letter from our Potentate:

The year was 1886. Grover Cleveland was the President of the United States. Pharmacist Dr. John Pemberton invented the first carbonated beverage that would be named Coca-Cola. Apache leader Geronimo surrendered with the last band of warriors to General Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon in Arizona. And on June 14,1886,Zuhrah Shriners became the 23rd Shrine Temple in the North America. This stone paver shown in the photograph marks that event along with the dates of all of the chartered organizations of our beloved fraternity at our headquarters in Tampa, Florida.

What this means is that on June 14, 2016, Zuhrah Shriners will be in existence 130 years. What a great milestone that we need to celebrate. So on Sunday,June 12,2016,we will be having a birthday party for Zuhrah Shriners at our building at 6120 Blue Circle Drive. We will also be having a Parade of Units to allow all nobles, ladies and families to see and hear all of our performing and parade units up close and personal. So mark that date on your calendar today. More details to come. It will be a great family fun event. All parade and performing units, get ready to show off your best performance.

Membership! Membership! Membership! On May 7, 2016, will be the Spring Ceremonial. You can find more information below. The nobles and ladies from the Bloomington Area Shrine Club, the Ceremonial Unit and the Membership Committee have been hard at work to plan a great event for the new nobles and ladies, as well as all of the mobles and ladies of Zuhrah Shriners. The event will be held at the Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington and will include tours of the Masonic Home and the Run for the Roses Party. So make sure and get your candidates ready to join.

The Membership Team, along with the Divan, will be having a joint membership meeting with the Osman Shriners on March 21, 2016.They are meeting to discuss how they can work together on increasing membership in both organizations. Osman and Zuhrah will be sponsoring a hospitality room at Grand Lodge,April 7-9, 2016, at the DoubleTree, and the “BIG TENT” event November 12, 2016.

So have you been at 6120 Blue Circle Drive lately? Thank you to a lot of very dedicated and experienced nobles who have been hard at work getting the sound system and the televisions in the Oasis. All of the shadow boxes are up.If your club or unit wants to display information in one of the shadow boxes, contact Jim Burlingame Jr as soon as possible. For $50 you can get choice of location. We are also putting the plans to get the patio started, so if you still want a patio brick, the time is now.The Housing Committee could also use funds and assistance to complete some major and minor projects on their wish list. So please,Make a Difference!

Oh, and you can tell it’s spring. The wild turkeys are back! You have to come down and see!

We are Zuhrah – We Make A Difference

March News

The March Arabian is available to view online.

A letter from our Potentate:

There were 25 Sons of the Desert that made the pilgrimage from Minneapolis to Marquette, Michigan, for the 2016 Midwest Winter Session the first weekend in February. Thanks to Pilgrimage Chair Verl Raap for planning and executing a great trip. Thanks to the 2016 Aides for managing the bus and hospitality room. Our boat racers were quite stylish in their MSA t-shirts and they are proud new owners of the coveted boat race cards.

The messages we came back with from our Imperial Officer’s Presentations were:

  • Membership still needs to be a top priority.
  • Focus on the Outreach Clinics for our hospitals.

So the message to you is this. Our membership program may seem like a beach full of starfish. But if we work on one starfish at a time, one candidate at a time or one noble at a time, we will Make a Difference in this membership program. Nobles, we need your help. As many nobles as we bring in we lose them if they do not get connected to our organization. So the membership team needs a current noble to mentor each and every noble we bring in this year. As of now that’s nine new nobles that the Membership team needs. It’s just one noble. So please contact Jon Pavola or Chaz Miller and let’s get these nobles connected.

Thank you all for such a great kick-off to the Coins for Camps and Dollars Too fund-raising program. Mary has launched her ladies pin, and sales have been fantastic. We have also received the new Men’s Bolo which is the same design as the 2016 Potentate’s Pin.They both will be on sale at all events.

So even though the Child Life Program is the focus for 2016, we also want to remind everyone the hospital needs children. So if you are close to where an Outreach Clinic is happening, support it with kids in your area. Do you know of a child we can help? You may want to get a Clinic in your area? The staff at Shriners Hospital for Children–Twin Cities would gladly add to their Outreach Program.

So what if you step up and Make a Difference? You can be recognized and nominated for the Make a Difference award. January’s winner was Kevin Harding for his efforts in the 2016 branding program. February’s winner was Wayne Swenson for all his efforts with the Ho Ho Shriners Club, the Funsters and Zuhrah Shriners. Will you be next? Go to the website and nominate a noble today.

In March, the Marshal, Ron Peterson, will be swearing in the 2016 Provost Marshals at the stated meeting,March 11.The Order of the Malt,a great night for brotherhood, a unique degree and fine spirits is scheduled for March 12.So check your calendars and plan to attend.

And always remember: We are Zuhrah – We Make A Difference

A letter from our Potentate:

Thank You, Nobles of Zuhrah Shriners, for placing your trust and confidence in electing me to serve as your Potentate for 2016.As is written within the installation obligation, “he who would be greatest among us must be servants of all” is a promise that we, the leaders of Zuhrah Shriners, make to you today and tomorrow. We will commit to you the needs of Zuhrah Shriners ahead of our own. This is represented to you by the 2016 Potentate’s Pin you see here.

2016 Pin

The shape of the pin is a diamond. If you can remember signs on roadways where curves are ahead a diamond sign represents change in the roadway. Likewise, the diamond represents change that needs to happen in our organization to move forward and remain strong. The Zuhrah Shrine logo in the center represents the future branding of our organization. The Scimitar,on the bottom of the pin,is our traditional logo representing our heritage. The tag line We are Zuhrah – We Make A Difference is a statement to the strength of our organization and our desire to make a difference in every way.

So how do we make a difference? The Starfish story is a story of the man seeing a boy throwing starfish back into the ocean. The man sees the difficult task of thousands of starfish on the beach where the boy sees just one and by saving the life of that one he’s able to make a difference. This is what we, as Zuhrah Shriners need to remind ourselves. Even though the task at hand seems to be large and overwhelming, focusing on some part we can change and we will make a difference.

So it’s now my pleasure to introduce to you the Make a Difference award. The award is shown to the right and includes the story with a lapel pin to proudly show your dedication to Zuhrah Shriners and the Shriners Hospital for children. I encourage you to submit names of nobles that make a difference in the process of daily activity.

One of our objectives for 2016 is to Increase the health and strength of Zuhrah Shriners. Within this objective is increasing our communication in which two changes have happened. If you are a club and unit leader you may have had communication with our Marshal, Ron Peterson. Within his Marshal position he will be the hub of the Communication Committee and needs to know any additions or changes to events happening within Zuhrah. You may also have seen changes to the eRabian and by this printing, a new Zuhrah.org website. All of which are making a difference in how we communicate.

Finally, as a longtime member of the Zuhrah Pipes and Drums, I’ve asked the unit to bring back two events that had been traditions in the band and both of these events will be at our new home. First, is the Chili Cook-off on the 20th of February with a new twist of a game night. So here’s the official challenge to all of you and the clubs and units who think you can make the best Chili and challenge the Pipes and Drums who have years of experience. Then on Saturday, the 12th of March, will be the Order of the Malt. Yes, scotch whiskey at its finest and a degree allowing you to become a member in the Order of the Malt. This is a gentlemen’s only event but follow the Arabian, the eRabian, and visit the website as there is also plans to have a ladies event opposite this event.

In closing I leave you with this thought: We are Zuhrah – We Make A Difference
